Observatory Cape Town: Place Branding

I wanted to redesign Obz’s branding as one that is intimate with its audience and that stays true to its alternative, bohemian nature. I develop a handcrafted, illustrated psychedelic and symbolic branding that speaks specifically to Obz as a place and it its people being creative and taking initiative into their own hands when becoming entrepreneurs. Although Obz is known for its bohemian nature and funky shops I wanted to bring in the element of it being a small community with charm and a big heart. Obz may be vibrant, flamboyant and eccentric on the surface – it is a place of community, trust and understanding. With a variety of activities, restaurants and events at its heart Observatory is generous, playful, young and inviting. This then lead me to develop my message small charm, Big Heart.

The tagline that “small charm, big heart” will be used to describe what Obz is like – that although their alternative and bohemian charm may not appeal to everyone, they have a heart that fills everyone and forms intimate connections between people, cultures, races and nationalities from all over the world. This satisfies the brief because i have created a visual identity that resonates with the culture and values of its residents, as well as being unique in comparison to its competitors. It is able to carry the same identity, tone, look and feel across all elements and tells a story of Observatory that not many people would dive deeper into – the one of their generosity and drive.
